If you're planning to get an electric vehicle or already have one, the SEAI EV Home Charger Grant can help you install a home charging point at a reduced cost.

This article explains how the grant works, what you need to be eligible, and how to find a local installer to do the job.

What is the EV Home Charger Grant?

The grant offers up to €300 towards the cost of purchasing and installing a home EV charger. It's designed to support Ireland's transition to electric vehicles by making home charging more accessible and affordable.

You must apply to SEAI and receive a grant offer before the charger is installed.

Do I qualify?

To qualify for the EV Home Charger Grant, you must meet the following conditions:

  • Own or rent a home in Ireland with off-street parking
  • Ensure the charger will be connected to your home's fuse board
  • Have not previously received an EV home charger grant or free ESB charger before 2018

You can apply even if you don’t own an electric vehicle yet.

What does the grant cover?

The grant covers up to €300 towards:

  • Cost of purchasing a compliant smart home charger
  • Professional installation by a Safe Electric-registered electrician

Many installers will help you manage the grant paperwork too.

How can I apply for the grant?

Here's a step-by-step look at the application process:

  1. Apply online through the SEAI website
  2. Receive a Letter of Offer with your grant approval
  3. Get your charger installed by a registered electrician
  4. Submit your payment request form along with your invoice, photos of the installed charger, Certificate Number 3 and Test Record Sheet
  5. Receive your grant payment within 4–6 weeks

Why do I need a smart charger?

Since 2022, SEAI only supports smart chargers that meet specific technical standards. These chargers are capable of remote operation and energy usage monitoring.

Check the SEAI Smart Charger Register to ensure your charger is eligible.
